Final expense

Life insurance intended to help with end-of-life costs.

Final-expense coverage is life insurance intended to provide a death benefit that beneficiaries may use for funeral costs, medical bills, debts, or other needs. It is not a prepaid funeral plan.

The beneficiary receives the benefit

The named beneficiary generally decides how to use policy proceeds. The policy is separate from any agreement with a funeral home or cemetery.

Ask about early-policy limitations

Some policies may limit the death benefit during an initial period for certain causes of death. Any graded benefit, modified benefit, or waiting period should be clearly explained before an application.

Compare the complete contract

Consider premium duration, maximum benefit, underwriting questions, exclusions, riders, cash value or surrender provisions, and what happens if premiums stop.
